  Traveling to Canada

Transport

The Saskatoon Airport has no direct overseas flights so travelers will have to connect from Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver or Minneapolis. Connections through Toronto or Vancouver will be with Air Canada, a Star Alliance member along with Asiana Airlines, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines and United Airlines. Connections through Minneapolis will be with Northwest Airlines, a SkyTeam member along with KLM, Continental Airlines, Korean Air and AeroFlot.

Money

The Canadian Dollar is the official currency of Canada, although many shops and locations also accept the US dollar. For information on how the Canadian dollar rates to the currency of your home country, the following link will direct you to a live currency conversion website: http://www.gocurrency.com.

Language

The two official languages of Canada are English and French. However, in western Canada (including Saskatoon) English is predominant with only a small percentage of people able to speak fluent French.

Electricity

Canada has a 120V/60Hz electrical grid, with household sockets accepting Type A and Type B power plugs. This is the same as the United States.

Climate

In July, Saskatoon has warm days (25°C average daily maximum) and cool evenings (11°C average daily minimum). See also, Saskatoon Climate Normals.

Sales Tax

There are two main forms of sales tax throughout Canada which are added onto the price of goods at payment. A Goods and Services Tax (GST) of 6 per cent is added on to the sale of all goods and services (in Quebec, GST is known as TPS). A Provincial Sales Tax (PST) is payable on most items, and it varies from province to province. In Saskatchewan the PST is 5 per cent. For more information visit: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tax/business/topics/gst/menu-e.html.

Social Conventions

Handshaking predominates as the normal mode of greeting. Close friends often exchange kisses on the cheeks and hug.
